A person who has studied English as a foreign language without paying attention to its cultural content and background will have a limited or distorted use of the language. He may not be aware of the fact that vocabularies vary not only in size, but also in usability, and curiously enough their usability varies with the way they are used. For example, we often speak of England and the English when we mean Britain and the British.
